The biggest problem that custom seat installers face is the lack of clear info on how to deal with the air bag system and the passenger seat occupancy indicator as it interacts with the airbag system. There are many You Tube videos and other articles on line dealing with the issues for various vehicles, but I could never find a type specific one that actually dealt with the problems in my particular installation, in a 2021 Promaster
Side Airbags are not installed in any custom seats that I have learned of, but I could be wrong.
The DiscountVan seats have no side airbags!
The Ram dealer told me that no changes could be made without disabling the airbag system. Many others said “Custom Seats will not be compatible with the airbag system”.
I completed the installation-then tried many things from the internet to resolve the airbag warning and the seat occupancy light (seatbelt warning) none of which worked! The Airbag simulators did not work-because the wiring in the Promaster is different! DiscountVan was Zero help, and finally I realized that Ram has different wiring than all of the things shown on various places online.
The secret is: Take apart the factory seats -carefully strip the wiring out-without cutting any of it-I will give detailed instructions in a separate blog. If you are an electronics person-I am sure you could solve this without stripping the wires from the seats because it involves a separate ground for the circuit. This Blog is for those who aren’t and don’t want to become electronics experts to install new seats. To keep it simple, I am just using the wiring harness from the seats. The result is: The vehicle -a 2021 Promaster 2500 with the new custom seats, has no fault notices in the Air Bag subsystem. It cleared the faults as soon as I used the factory harness with a resistor as an airbag emulator, and used the seat occupancy sensor assembly from the factory seat.
